1.�Archeological Site of �Volubilis � Morocco

Location:�This cultural historical world heritage site is located about 30 kms North of Meknes in Morocco.

Description:�Volubilis is Roman Empire�s most remote and far flung base and it lasted for nearly two centuries after establishing.

Built in 168-169 AD this town consists of array of ancient buildings enclosed by a rampant eight monumental gates.

This ancient roman town is the center of Olive oil production and recent archeological evidences points out that these buildings were under occupation for 1000 years from Ancient roman period to recent Islamic period.�2.�

2. Fossil Hominid Sites

Location � The fossil Hominid sites of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans, Kromdraai and Environs are located 45 km west of Johannesburg, in South Africa.

Description

  • This world heritage property provides an extraordinary wealth of fossils and other evidence tracing the evolution of humankind from our earliest hominid ancestors, over a period of 3.3 million years. Hence this site is also called �cradle of Human kind�
  • Remarkable finds also include specimens of early life and numerous bones and stone tools.
  • The site provides the first evidences of use of fire which is probably 1.8 to 1.0 million years ago which notes a critical evolutionary mark.
  • The rich fossil beds have also yielded many mammals, insects and plant fossils that helps us understand the environment in which humans have evolved

3. Robben Island

This most famous and familiar island is few kilometers away from glitzy V&A Waterfront and was home town to Nelson Mandela for nearly 20 years. Located about 7 kms west of Bloubergstrand, Cape Town, South Africa.

Description

  • This current forlorn yet tranquil island was once an intention to silence anti apartheid.
  • This historical prison was built by Dutch to banish their political trouble makers.
  • Nelson Mandela was sent into this prison in 1963 as a political prisoner.
  • A beautiful shrine called Kramat, built in honor of Tuan Guru a holy man who went on to found Islam in Cape town was also a prisoner in the prison under the Dutch rule.
  • The entire trip lasts for 3 hours starting with a 30 minute ferry trip to the small harbor. And from there a small bus tour to the historical places like leper graveyard, A church and Kramat shrine.

4. Mapungubwe National Park

This UNESCO world heritage site lies on northern border of the Limpoo province in Vhembe South Africa.

  • Considered the most influential and important Iron Age site in South Africa, Mapungubwe National Park in the Limpopo Province was once the home of a prevailing and powerful African kingdom
  • Palace sites and the ‘Lost City of Gold’ remain virtually intact along with two former city sites.
  • �The most famous artefact is the Golden Rhino, a single horned wooden carving covered in gold leaf. Its single horn is characteristic of the Indian rhino, an influence attributed to trade with�India
