Australian Fossil Mammal Sites (Riversleigh Naracoorte)

In my own view Australian Fossil Mammal Sites at Riversleigh and Naracoorte were inscribed in the World Heritage for their outstanding representation of the evolution of Australian mammals and the quality of their fossils, which are preserved in limestone. The area open to the public was one of the first fossil deposits found, and gives visitors an opportunity to view many fossilised mammals and reptiles first hand. The Naracoorte site provides evidence of key stages in the evolution of the fauna of the worlds most isolated continent. The history of mammal lineages in modern Australia can be traced through these fossil deposits and, as a consequence, there is a better understanding of the conservation status of living mammals and their communities.
