The Cathedral of Saint James in Sibenik is a Gothic-Renaissance construction built entirely from stone. It was built in three phases, by three architects, between 1431 and 1535.

The form and the decorative elements of the Cathedral, such as a remarkable frieze decorated with 71 sculptured faces of men, women, and children, also illustrate the successful fusion of Gothic and Renaissance art.
- It is the only cathedral in the whole of Europe constructed entirely of stone. No wooden architectural elements were used for its building.
- It is also the first construction in the whole of Europe, the assemblage of which was based on a unique system of inter grooved stone plates
- The cathedral suffered damage during both World War II and the fighting in 1991
