City of Wine

The landscape of Saint-Emilion surrounded in area of 5,565 hectares is an outstanding place to experience the vineyard monoculture. The yummiest vines of different flavours can be tasted here. Waking through the streets you will find the beautiful houses, churches, monasteries, hospices whose history lie in 11th century.

The first traces of human settlement in the Saint-Emilion region date back at least to the Upper Palaeolithic (35,000-10,000 BC). The Pierrefitte menhir confirms human presence in the 5th-4th millennia BC. The Roman occupation began when Augustus created the province of Aquitania in 27 BC. The modern City is only classified region in Bordeaux that update sits classification every 10 years. St. Emilion was honoured to be classified under UNESCO world heritage site in 1999, and got the support.

The reason it produces ripest red wine and many other wines lies in the fertility of its soil containing limestone which is rich in calcium, being an important vine nutrient.
