Durham Chandelier

Durham Chandelier, The Bowes Museum

The (County) Durham Chandelier or bird table is a type of corn dolly specific to the county of Durham. Originators of corn dollies believe the two in The Bowes Museum, Newgate, Barnard Castle, County Durham are amongst the finest specimens. At harvest time, farmers made a corn dolly from the last sheaf of corn the reaper harvests. By linking the intangible cultural heritage of crafting corn dollies to Harvest Festivals (on the Sunday nearest to the Harvest Moon, the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox), these thanksgivings could consider healthful eating and social responsibility.
