Aligarh’s Clock Tower: A heritage walk

A guided tour of the Clocktower in Aligarh, starting from center point T-Junction to the Maulana Abdul Khaliq Road was organized on 25 March from 10:30 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. The Ghanta Ghar or Clock Tower is one of the oldest locations in Aligarh, and is more than 200 years old. It is situated in front of the residence of the district magistrate.

According to one local person, various Hindi movies like Haidar, Aligarh, Mohabbatein, Ranjhanna etc mentioned Aligarh in their film narratives. Gothic Architecture is found in this tower very strikingly. There are various elements like pointed arches, the gothic vault, and stained glass. Gothic Architecture is also marked by the presence of the high door and window openings, arcades, vaulting and ornamentation of the pointed arches which indeed is so characteristic as to give a suggestion of height coinciding with the aspiring tendency of style and it’s connection with the religious enthusiasm of the period.

The event really allowed us participants to observe built heritage, and study the design principles that guided the architectural process of our predecessors.
