walking the historical trail in Amchi Mumbai
Do you know the second most photographed monument in the country after Taj Mahal is world heritage site of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai? This is the only heritage building in the world which serves as a working station for long distance and suburban rails as well as functional administrative office (of Central Railways).
I was invited by the Indian Railways to visit this grand heritage during the heritage week celebrations (July 2-6, 2016).
Heritage walks, quiz and talks were organised during the week to make public aware of this grand heritage. I found the station to be a living heritage with trains leaving and entering platforms inside this over a century old Gothic-Indo Sarcenic structure.
I left the station on a rain soaked morning thinking why can’t such events be replicated at other world heritage sites in the country. India is abound by historical and cultural monuments and this facet of the country should be given widespread publicity.
