Talamanca Range-La Amistad Reserves / La Amistad National Park

I've been here!

The location of this unique site in Central America, where Quaternary glaciers have left their mark, has allowed the fauna and flora of North and South America to interbreed. Tropical rainforests cover most of the area. Four different Indian tribes inhabit this property, which benefits from close co-operation between Costa Rica and Panama.

Trivia

  • The La Amistad/Talamanca Highlands support a majority of Costa Rica’s plant and animal species and due to its remoteness and inaccessibility the area remains one of the largest, least disturbed areas of tropical forest in Central America.
  • In addition to its biological diversity, Costa Rica’s largest population of indigenous communities (Cabecar, Bribris, Naso Teribe and Ngobes) inhabits the Talamanca highlands. These indigenous territories in the highlands make up a large portion of the buffer zone of the Amistad International Park in both Costa Rica and Panama.
  • 90% of Costa Rica’s known plant species are found in this region — 30% of which are endemic to the area.

Year of Inscription: 1983
