Kolkata. 42 Degrees.
That was the only thought which was in my mind when I was about to leave my house to visit the ancient St. Paul�s Cathedral. Kolkata is a city which is of great historical importance and has some of the most beautiful and magnificent heritage sites built way back in the 19th century. From my childhood itself I have been very attracted to churches and I find utmost peace there, like no other place. I chose St. Paul�s Cathedral not only for its historic importance but because this place is very close to my heart.
Built between 1839 and 1847, St Paul’s Cathedral is one of India’s most important churches. It has been constructed in�Gothic Revival style�with stained glass windows and two�frescoes�in�Florentine Renaissance style. It is situated at the East of the Victoria Memorial at the South end of the Maidan, two very important tourist places of the City of Joy. The steeple fell during an earthquake in 1897 and was redesigned and rebuilt. Inside there’s some interesting memorials and stained glass, including the west window by Sir Edward Burne-Jones. St. Paul’s Cathedral is the first Episcopal Church of the Orient.
Even though it was terribly humid, I felt so calm and satisfied when I entered the Church, after I had taken the selfie. I took a taxi from my house to reach the Church. There were a lot of �Nimbu Paani� sellers outside the Church which proved to be a relief. The M.P. Birla Planetarium is situated right outside the Church on the right side where I spotted enthusiastic children all excited to go in.
I had a great time there and thanks to GoUNESCO that I found a reason to visit this Holy place once again, which might have not been possible otherwise due to the scorching heat. Also, midway I realized that I had forgotten to take the GoUNESCO image which I had printed out the previous day. After a lot of fidgeting I managed to open the link on my phone. I used an editing app to write my name and finally I was all set. To get the perfect selfie was another task, but well I really had fun!
