Movies and World Heritage Sites

Here are five movies which have been shot in World Heritage Sites.

1. The Dark Knight Rises (Hill Forts of Rajasthan, Meherangarh) : It is hard to forget the allure that Hollywood has with Rajasthan. The famous scene where Bruce Wayne escapes the dark prison pit where Bane puts him in. However, the scenery that is shown when gets up is Jodhpur. The scene was shot in Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort, during the extremely hot month of May. According to Emma Thompson, the decision to shoot in Jodhpur came in as they were searching for a remote area. “We wanted a sequence that needed to be in the middle of nowhere, and the place where we shot is beautiful and clearly very remote…it was an exciting way to start the movie,” Emma has been quoted as saying.

2.Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade (Al Khazneh -Jordan- Petra) – One of the most important scenes of the movie when Indy Jones, his father and his friends escape without retrieving the Holy Grail as the temple crumbles down was shot in Jordan. The next day, filming moved to the ancient city ofPetra,Jordan, whereAl Khazneh(The Treasury) stood in for the temple housing the Grail. The cast and crew became guests ofKing HusseinandQueen Noor. The Treasury had previously appeared inSinbad and the Eye of the Tiger. The main cast completed their scenes that week, after 63 days of filming.

3.Roman Holiday ( Historic Centre of Florence) – One of the most romantic movies of the past centuries show the beauty of Italy through black and white. The amusing and famous scenes shot in the middle of Florence, takes place with Gregory Peck and debutant Audrey Hepburn on a rickety Vespa. The entire movie takes place in Italy and was extensively shot there.

4. Before Sunset ( Paris, banks of the Siene) – One of my all-time favorite movies was shot in Paris, on the banks of the Seine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jesse and Celine talk, talk and talk some more while walking through the streets of Paris and the penultimate scene before the end takes place here. The film is spectacularly shot all over Paris and helps make the beautiful city almost become a character in the film.

5. Guide (Hill Forts of Rajasthan, Chittorgarh Fort)– The Chittor complex houses the largest fort in India, Rajasthan. The most famous scene in Guide where the song ” Aaj phir jeene ki tamanna hai” is performed was shot here. You can see see the Victory Towere and even Rani Padmini’s castle in various sequences.
