The Nairobi city Market sits in the Central business district of Kenyaa capital, Nairobi. It is managed by the City County of Nairobi and was constructed in 1932. It has six gates which are manned on a 24 hour basis by guards employed by the council.
The market houses more than 276 registered tenants, who pay monthly rent to the county depending on the size of their stall. The county supplies hygiene facilities like water and toilets to the market.
The market has four sections. One section is the curio sector which displays Kenyas cultural touch complete with artefacts.
The second is the Butchery section which is famous for its fresh meat. You will always find Beef, Chicken and Fish.
The third is the food court which sells traditionally roasted meat known as nyama choma and traditional vegetables locally know an as managu and sukuma wiki.
The fourth sector sells fresh flowers and business during the festive season and other occasions like weddings. The flower vendors also supply flowers to office buildings to beautify the reception area and senior management offices.
The Nairobi city market receives more than 20000 visitors in one month. It was declared a monument by the National Museums of Kenya in 2009 and was confirmed as a monument in 2010 through Kenyas Ministry of National Heritage.
