The 38th session of the World Heritage Committee is currently underway in Doha, Qatar. The committee has added 19 cultural and 1 natural to the World heritage list, bringing the total number of World Heritage sites to 1001.
GoUNESCO is proud to be represented here, thanks to our Campus Ambassador Asanti Astari, who is volunteering at the session.

Mixed Sites

Extensions

  1. Ancient Maya City of Calakmul, Campeche has been extended to include the Protected Tropical Forests of Calakmul and it now becomes a mixed natural and cultural property.
  2. Bialowieza Forest – The modification to this property translates as a reduction of over 5000 hectares on the Belarus side and a vast extension of the Polish section, from 5069 to 59,576 hectares.
  3. Wadden Sea – The complete extension now covers most of the Danish Wadden Sea maritime conservation area, as well as a maritime extension of the Dutch Wadden Sea Conservation Area and the German Wadden Sea National Parks of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.
  4. South China Karst (Phase II) – The extension covers an area of almost 50 000 hectares. This serial site now includes 12 elements spread over the provinces of Guizhou, Guangxi, Yunnan and Chongqing and covering 176 228 hectares. It contains the most significant types of karst landforms, including tower karst, pinnacle karst and cone karst formations, along with other spectacular characteristics such as natural bridges, gorges and large cave systems.
