Every month, GoUNESCO explores different themes in heritage. This helps us focus not only on popular forms of heritage, but some which do not get a lot of attention. Our interns are assigned tasks that follow these themes and we publish a lot of informative articles with the focus theme.
You can contribute articles, photos, videos about these monthly too! Or share on social media and tag us there – we are on facebook, instagram, twitter and youtube.
Here are the themes at GoUNESCO planned for 2017 –
January: Built Heritage
Built heritage is a complete, tangible manifestation of the intangible. The inception of any built structurestands testimony to the then prevailingculture. The popular ideas, techniques and skills, cultural values and norms, all shape up the built environment. This month weto lookpast just the age and architectural style of historic building and dwell deeper into understanding how these historic facades give us a glimpse in the bygone era and culture.
February: Local Economy: Insight into Traditions, History and Heritage
Often economy and heritage are studied together to see how the latter provides for the present economics of the country. However, we plan to study the two in a different light. Throughout the month, we focus ontraditional industries prevalent in the historic core, the indigenous produce and products, and even other aspects that aided commerce such as markets etc.
March: Exploring the Unexplored
We owe a lot to local, national and international organizations for preserving and protecting heritage. These cultural remenants and natural sites need to meet certain criteria, embody significance, for it to be taken under the folds of protections of some organization. However, what about the sites that fail to meet those criterias? So this month we explore the lesser known heritage.
April: Delicious Heritage
Food is an inseparable aspect of culture. The journey of food, right from cultivation to the mouth watering dishes on our plate, spells out uniqueness of a each culture. April might be a month to fool but we will get you to drool 🙂
May: Heritage Conservation
This month we trace how conservation as a field has evolved through time. We explore the different philosophical and cultural difference when defining the very term.
June: Oral Histories and Traditions
Before writing, transmission of knowledge, values and tradition, from one generation to another relied on oral traditions. These traditions are not a thing of the past. Many societies even today extensively rely on this medium to educate the younger generation. Oral traditions are therefore a very important fragment of intangible heritage which is even recognized by UNESCO. (Read more here)
Oral histories too are one of the most prized sources of information. They help fill in the gaps and help balance out the written records. Thesenarratives help us to gain insight into a different era and always from a new personal perspective.
