Sikkim and North West Bengal were hit by a massive earthquake in 2011. Apart from the loss of life and homes it caused, the earthquake also affected the 132 year old Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The 78km railway line from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling was built in 1881 and touches the highest railway station in India – Ghum. Restoration work after the earthquake has been progressing slowly, due to the apathy by both the central and state governments. UNESCO has now suggested the Indian Railways to apprise them of the progress on the restoration work whose rate they are concerned about.
