WurzBurg Residence - Make Heritage Fun!

For the travellers aspiring to travel to the Romantic world a visit to the Wurzburg Residence in Bavaria is a must. The Würzburg Residence (German: Würzburger Residenz) is a palace in Würzburg, southern Germany. Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt and Maximilian von Welsch, representents of the Austrian/South German Baroque were involved in the construction, as well as Robert de Cotte and Germain Boffrand, who were followers of the French Style It was constructed between the years 1720 and 1744 and was the brainchild of the plans of Balthazar Newman. The place was declared a World Heritage Site in the year 1981. This marvelous monument once served as the home to powerful prince-bishops of the Schonborn family and today attracts visitors from far and wide. The UNESCO described this palace as the most homogeneous and most extraordinary of the Baroque places.

One of the striking features of the structure is the famous staircase with its unsupported vaulted ceiling features and is one of the largest ceiling frescos in the world. It was painted during the years 1752/53 by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and an allegory of the four continents of the earth known at that time. A closer look at the interior reveals the magnificence of the sequence of the rooms. Another impressive art inside the palace is the completely restored mirrored hall which was reopened in 1987. The rooms contain some Wurzburg rococo masterpieces. The court garden was designed at the end of the 18th century by the landscape gardener Johann Prokop Mayer, featuring sculptures by Johann Peter Wagner. Venetian paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries are on display in the state gallery. The reconstruction was taken because of the terrible damage caused to the building by the bombings of the Second World War. There is also a beautiful court chapel which can be entered separately from the residence square. It is one of the finest examples of religious architecture.
